Problems / Breakdowns

XTR: Two short cuts (because of a worn out cable isolation), very easy and fast to fix and a flat on the front tyre because of some barp wire

XTZ: The bolt of the side stand got lost and the cockpit broke beacause of too many washboard roads. We welded it in Kyrgyzstan.

Road Conditions
The main road the famous “Pamir Highway” is not really a highway. It is a pretty shitty tarmac road which one should avoid if possible. Nearly everything east of Dushanbee is apart from the M41 gravel or dirt road. The Wakhan Valley was pretty easy for us to ride but it depends on the season and weather as well.
Paperwork
Visa: Nearly everyone needs a visa. There is an E-Visa available or you can apply at a Tadjik embassy

Carnet de Passage: No need for a carnet

Insurance: We did not get one

Registration permit: For a stupid reason no one understands, you can only get a 15 day permit for your vehicle. This can be extended in two different places but only a day or so before the old one runs out and mostly they do not really want to do it. We couldn’t so we played safe and left the country before this. Now we know that we would have needed a little bit more of curage and pretend that we lost the papers, as they wont be able to control it anyway at the border to Kyrgyzstan (the very far east one).
Notable
We loved the country and we would have liked to stay longer. Unfortunately you only get an import permit for 15 days on arrival and we did not want to risk the 70 USD penalty per day.
Important information
Here some very country specific information:
- Make sure you use an additional fuel filter as the petrol out of the cans is often very dirty!
- Get enough money in Dushanbe, as there are not many ATM. Bring some USD as well to pay the entry permit (10 USD per bike)
- Use a water filter even if the streams look super fresh. Many people get ill because they drink from it.
