Additional fuel filter
Review
Review
During the planning phase of our big trip, we have always followed travelers through their Facebook sites and blogs. So we read about motorcycle travelers, who became stranded beside the road after refueling by canister. The petrol was stored in rusting metal canisters and therefore was contaminated and probably also diluted with water. They had to drain the dirty fuel tanks, remove the tanks and clean the fuel filters in the middle of nowhere, before they could go on. The contaminated petrol had clogged the small standard petrol filters and therefore the engines got no petrol. This could also damage the petrol pump, which would be quite a problem in a remote area.
Another problem is if they mix water into the petrol, which happens quite a lot in some areas. Since water is heavier than petrol, the engine will only suck the deeper located water and therefore will not run at all or very badly.
We prefer to skip this kind of adventure and therefore searched for an additional fuel filter.
With the additional fuel filters by Guglatech we found what we were looking for: the fuel filter “Expedition 15 Microns”.
In Florence we picked up the filters directly from Veronica and Guglielmo, who also showed us how to install the filters. The additional fuel filters are supplied with a large cable tie, which serves to position the fuel filter in the tank correctly.
The filters were very easy to install and did not need any maintenance or adjustments. At the first few refueling, the filters needed a certain time until they were completely soaked, therefore it needed some time. After that, we were able to fill up almost as fast as without the additional fuel filters.
They filter very fine impurities, for example rust, sand or dust from the petrol. Water is also retained by the filter and only released gradually into the tank, which does not lead to any problems. This way we had not to worry about contaminated fuel and could buy fuel in PET bottles or canisters along the road. This is normal in many countries since there are not always many petrol stations along the way.
When we exchanged the filters after six months (it was not necessary, but we had the chance to try the latest version) with the newer and better HDM3D filter, we were amazed how much dirt had accumulated in the filters. Metal parts, tar, small stones and sand, everything got caught in there. We are sure that our beloved motorbikes are happy that these things never got to the actual filter or the fuel pump.
Already at the first refueling with the new filter version, we noticed that we could fill up with the much faster than with the previous filter model. The refueling is now just as fast as without additional fuel filter. The further development of this product remedied this disadvantage completely.
The new HDM3D model filters dirty petrol even more consistently than the Expedition filter and surpasses it also in the performance to restrain the water from the fuel.
Therefore, the HDM3D filter became one of the reasonable and best upgrades we have made on our motorcycles!
